Our story begins with our three characters. Max, Tiffany and Roger. Max and Tiffany have been in a relationship for three months now, and they seem to be going pretty well. They are in a de facto relationship and playing house with each other is a lot of fun to Max. Max feels like he has hit a winner with Tiffany, and Tiffany kinda likes being with Max too.
The problem begins when Roger calls Tiffany out of the blue. His phone call entails how he has just separated from his fiance and Tiffany seemed like the right person to call. In a previous relationship, Roger and Tiffany had been dating for about two years. This was about five years ago. Roger really wants to talk to Tiffany and Tiffany obliges.
They have several conversations over the phone, not just one. The conversations on the phone are about Roger trying to rekindle his old flame with Tiffany. Roger wants to get back with Tiffany, and Tiffany kind of likes all of the attention from an old lover. Roger is trying to tell Tiffany how much he is in love with her and how much he wants to be with her in a relationship just like the one they had five years ago.
Tiffany makes a decision to tell Max about Roger. Max had heard about Roger before, Tiffany told Max about Roger when they were early on into the relationship. The news comes as a surprise to Max, as he and Tiffany are in a de facto relationship and everything about the relationship seemed to be going along sweet.
Max obviously doesn’t like this situation. Tiffany is constantly talking about Roger, and it really annoys Max because Tiffany could be talking about other things, like how much she is in love with him. Tiffany is always waiting for Roger to call her, and Max knows it. Max feels like the relationship has taken a turn for the worse.
Max finally cracks it with Tiffany and decides to give her an ultimatum. She can either break it off with Roger, so that she will be exclusively with Max, or she can call Roger and get it all out of her system. Max is saddened about telling Tiffany this because he is really in love with his baby.
Unfortunately, Tiffany wants to be with Roger. Tiffany goes out with him one night and they have the time of their lives. The relationship that they had had before Max and Tiffany got together seems to spark up again, and Max is left wondering, what will Tiffany do? Tiffany is treating Max like he is her second choice. Tiffany wants to be with Roger again, but can’t be sure that she wants to dump Max from being her boyfriend. Max is waiting in the sidelines for Tiffany to make her decision. Tiffany doesn’t want to dump Max, but Roger is obviously her first choice.
While all of this concerns about who Tiffany will be in a relationship with going on, Max has realised his love for Tiffany. Max truly feels like he is in love with Tiffany, and wants his baby back. He misses her smile, and he misses her being beside him in their bed late at night. He deeply misses his conversations with her and the twinkle in her eye when they are chatting. They are still living together - Tiffany still hasn’t moved all of her stuff out. She just hasn’t been coming home to Max like any de facto would.
What should Max do? Max’s quandary is that he is Tiffany’s second choice. He truly wants his baby back, but cannot handle the rejection of being second to some old boyfriend who waltzes on in there and steals his girlfriend. Max deosn’t know if he should put up a fight to keep Tiffany or just let her loose on Roger so they can be truly happy together, which is what Max wants for Tiffany anyway.
Max, you should just make a decision to let Tiffany go. She is effectively cheating on you, and while you may be in a committed de facto relationship, she isn’t living up to your expectations of what a de facto girlfriend should be. She wants to be with Roger over you, and while she hasn’t made her mind up, she is still dating Roger more than she is you. All it took was one phone call to get her started, imagine what would happen five years down the track and you two were together and somebody else mysteriously came into her life.
You have effectively become second choice to Roger. Being second choice isn’t right to anybody. I know how much you love her, but she isn’t in love with you. She has made Roger her first choice and she is with him at the moment. You can’t change her mind, no matter what you do. Love isn’t forcing people to do something, and can’t be dictated by pleas or arguments on why you should be with somebody. Love is love and people must be given the right to choose.
Max, you have been waiting for them to break up, but it doesn’t happen. Shouldn’t that give you a clue as to how the relationship has unfolded. She doesn’t want to be with you while Roger is around. Don’t think about killing Roger, just be happy for Tiffany like you always wanted to be.
Max, you should just let Tiffany go. She doesn’t love you anymore and is with another man. You can’t pin your hopes on a woman who has made you second choice. Being second choice is unacceptable in love. Wouldn’t you be much happier with somebody who has made you their first choice?
